Program Description

“right as diverse pathes leden the folk the righte wey to Rome”

The culmination of Jerry Wiggin’s love affair with the many ways to understand a person (aka personality assessment) was Paradigms of Personality Assessment. Therein eminent assessors from personological, psychoanalytic, interpersonal, multivariate, and empirical traditions independently assessed a single person, Madeline G. Twenty years later, Madeline G. agreed to be evaluated by contemporary exemplar clinicians of these five assessment traditions, with the project framed as a “therapeutic assessment” (Finn, 2006/2020).

This program identifies different ways to knowing a person. Empirical, experiential, and intersubjective sources of information supporting the project are illustrated with assessment material from Madeline in 1999 and 2018, including short video clips of clinical interactions, test data, and commentary.

Presenter

Mark H. Waugh, PhD, ABPPis a clinical psychologist in practice in Oak Ridge TN. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Florida at Gainesville, with post-doctoral training from Yale Psychiatric Institute, currently he is a staff psychologist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and adjunct clinical and teaching faculty at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He has published extensively and generally in the areas of assessment methods and personality disorders. He is the co-editor (with Christopher Hopwood and Abby Mulay) of The DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders: Integrating Multiple Paradigms of Personality Assessment  (Routledge, 2019). He considers it a great honor to have worked as co-editor with Christopher Hopwood in orchestrating the re-assessment of Madeline G., featuring exemplar clinicians updating this classic case, as presented in Personality Assessment Paradigms and Methods: A Collaborative Reassessment of Madeline G (Routledge, 2020).

Learning Objectives
After attending both parts (March 6 and 13, 2021) of this intermediate Conference in full, participants will be able to:

1. Describe similarities and differences of different paradigms of personality assessment.

2. State personality features that were stable and those that changed over time in this 20-year longitudinal case history.

3. Identify key aspects of the therapeutic assessment frame for appraising persons.

4. Recognize common expressions of the core idiographic “stamp” of a person evident from using different assessment instruments including intersubjective, experiential, and narrative modes of appraisals.

Participants
This program is open to all APS members. It is not limited to individuals practicing in a predominately psychoanalytic mode. The material will be appropriate for clinicians with intermediate levels of experience and knowledge.

Eligible professionals can join APS or renew their membership for the 2020-2021 program year for $40. Scholars and Early-Career Professionals can also join/renew for $40. Graduate students may join or renew for $10.

American Psychological Association Approval Statement
Division 39 is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Division 39 maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Continuing Education
The two-part online Spring Conference (March 6 and 13, 2021 programs), when attended in its entirety, is available for 4.0 continuing education credits. In this two-part conference, participants must attend the programs on March 6 and March 13, 2021 in full in order to be eligible for continuing education credits. With full attendance at both sessions and completion of an online program Evaluation and Learning Assessment, a certificate will be issued by email after the March 13, 2021 session of the conference.  Participants who attend only one program or attend part of both programs will not be eligible for continuing education credit. 


Psychologists will have their participation registered through Division 39.

To be eligible for CE credit, please:

  • Make sure your name appears in the Zoom Participant tab. Use the Chat Box to inform program hosts if more than one person is watching via a single Zoom account.

  • Be present for the entire program on March 6 and March 13, 2021. 

  • A link to the program evaluation will be shared with participants via the Chat Box at the end of the presentation on March 13, 2021 while the speaker is answering final questions. Participants will enter their names and email addresses on the evaluation so that APS can distribute certificates via email.

  • Please complete the evaluation by 1pm (eastern) on March 13, 2021.

  • CE certificates will be emailed following the event.
