Description of Program
This intermediate presentation will review essential features of contemporary interpersonal theory and assessment of personality and psychopathology using the interpersonal circumplex. Beginning with Harry Stack Sullivan’s interpersonal theory of psychiatry, we will review its operationalization by Timothy Leary, Donald Kiesler, and others who developed the interpersonal circle/circumplex and principles of complementarity. We will also examine contemporary applications of this methodology to personality assessment and clinical case formulation. We will touch upon the relationship of interpersonal theory to psychoanalytic object relations and attachment theories, and how Contemporary Integrative Interpersonal Theory (CIIT) incorporates these models. The presentation will end with a discussion of recent research exploring the affective dimensions underpinning the interpersonal circumplex and how this information may guide case formulation and psychotherapy process.
Participants are encouraged to read this paper re: the circumplex.
