Description of Program

This intermediate presentation will explore the implications of Brian Byrd's classic paper on the transference “crunch," when the therapist must learn to sit with the negative and/or hopeless projections of the patient into the treatment. Participants will be asked to reflect on their own experiences of negative therapeutic reaction and identify how theory and treatment of the “hardest part of analysis” have fared in the fifty years since the publication of the article.

Presenter

William MacGillivray, PhD, ABPP, is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He has presented frequently for APS as well as at Division 39 Spring Meetings.

Learning Objectives

After attending this intermediate program in full, participants will be able to:
1.
Compare and contrast the concept of transference as a specific phenomenon in treatment versus its universal character.

2. Discuss whether transference neurosis is still a viable/usable concept in light of Karl Kraus' idea that psychoanalysis is the illness which it purports to cure.

3. Compare and contrast previous and current concepts of countertransference (and share specific vignettes that reflect their understanding of countertransference).

Participants

This program is open to all APS members and other interested mental health professionals who may not be members. It is not limited to individuals practicing in a predominately psychoanalytic mode. The material will be appropriate for clinicians with intermediate levels of experience and knowledge.
