Program Description

This introductory conference provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory, evidence, and practice of Regulation Focused Psychotherapy for Children (RFP-C). RFP-C is a manualized, short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy for children with externalizing problems, designed to help children and their families understand the meaning of disruptive behavior and to increase effective emotion regulation. The current leaders of the RFP-C approach engage the audience in learning the theoretical and empirical underpinnings of RFP-C and focus through hands-on exercises on its clinical technique. Clinical work with racial and ethnic minority and underserved children is emphasized. Interactive small-group exercises accompany the didactic theoretical and empirical material. The introduction to the clinical technique unfolds through extensive video-taped footage of real-life psychotherapy and concludes in an extended case presentation with audience engagement. An invitation to the audience to present their own case material and clinical challenges in work with children with disruptive behaviors will conclude the presentation. RFP-C is among the several short-term psychodynamic psychotherapies with an evidence basis. Clinical vignettes of techniques with both children and their caregivers illustrate the practical aspects of its use. An extended clinical vignette through the story of an eight-year-old boy named Jonathan demonstrates common themes and challenges in work with children with externalizing problems. The audience will be engaged after a lunch break in an invitation to present their own cases with one of the authors. In conclusion, the audience's discussed case examples can be understood within an RFP-C model, which can provide helpful specific clinical direction. Effective assessment and therapeutic techniques for use with children who present with disruptive and defiant behavior, irritability, and emotional dysregulation is accessible and employable through the evidence-based short term psychodynamic psychotherapy RFP-C.

Presenters

Timothy Rice, MD, is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in practice in New York, NY.  He is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he is Division Director of Inpatient Services for Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West. He has presented nationally and international on the topic and has authored several papers and a book on the topic. 

Leon Hoffman, MD, a Psychiatrist and Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, is Training and Supervising Analyst in adult, child, and adolescent analysis, co-Director, Pacella Research Center at the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute; Faculty, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; Chief Psychiatrist/Psychoanalyst, West End Day School in NYC. In 2022 he delivered the American Academy of Child Psychiatry Norbert and Charlotte Rieger Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Award Lecure; the Paulina Kernberg Memorial Grand Rounds at the Weill Cornell Medicine Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Grand Rounds; and the Bruce A. Gibbard Lectureship in Psychiatry, University of Vermont, Department of Psychiatry.


Tracy A. Prout, PhD, is co-founder and director of IMPACT Psychological Services, a group practice with offices in Westchester and Beacon, New York. Prior to moving into full-time private practice, Dr. Prout was a tenured assistant professor of psychology at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology where she co-led the psychodynamic psychotherapy training program. She serves as Director of Research at the Center for Regulation Focused Psychotherapy and co-chair of APsaA's Fellowship Committee. She is the author of more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and several books, including a psychodynamic treatment manual for children with disruptive behaviors, a textbook entitled Essential Interviewing and Counseling Skills (now in its second edition), and several APA books on deliberate practice.

Can Buyukasik, MD, is a board-certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist in private practice in New York City. He is assistant professor of psychiatry at Donald & Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and a psychoanalytic candidate at New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. 

Dr. Tatianna Kufferath-Lin, PsyD, is a clinical psychologist and postdoctoral fellow at IMPACT Psychological Services in Mamaroneck, New York. She is a graduate of the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, where her dissertation focused on clinical process in RFP-C parent sessions. She regularly incorporates regulation-focused psychotherapy principles into her work providing psychotherapy and psychological evaluations to children, adolescents, and adults.

Learning Objectives

After attending this introductory conference in full, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the evidence basis for a short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy for children with disruptive behaviors.

2. Define defense mechanisms and implicit emotion regulation.

3. Identify three common defense mechanisms used by children with disruptive behaviors.

4. Apply two intervention strategies in clinical work with children who present with externalizing symptoms using an evidence-based, short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy technique.

5. Describe two practical benefits of short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy as a therapeutic option for children. 

Participants
This program is open to all APS members. It is not limited to individuals practicing in a predominately psychoanalytic mode. The material will be appropriate for clinicians with introductory levels of experience and knowledge.

This program, when attended in its entirety, is available for 5.0 continuing education credits. With full attendance and completion of a program Evaluation and Learning Assessment, a certificate will be issued. Psychologists will have their participation registered through Division 39.
